World Mental Health Day – What It Is & How to Get Involved

Each year on October 10, the world comes together to observe World Mental Health Day (WMHD)—a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health, reducing stigma, and promoting access to care. Since its launch in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health and supported by the World Health Organization, this day has grown into a global movement that encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to take action for mental wellness.

At Caravelle Counseling and Wellness, serving Jefferson and St Tammany parishes, we believe mental health matters every day. WMHD offers a unique opportunity to educate, connect, and empower our local community to prioritize emotional well-being.

Why WMHD Matters

Mental health challenges affect people of all ages and backgrounds. From stress and anxiety to depression and trauma, these experiences are common but often stigmatized. World Mental Health Day reminds us that mental health is a fundamental part of overall wellness, and that every community member can play a role in supporting others.

The 2025 global theme focuses on access to mental health services during emergencies, emphasizing the importance of knowing how to seek support when life becomes overwhelming.

How to Get Involved Locally

Even small actions in your neighborhood can contribute to a larger cultural shift around mental health. Here are some ways residents in New Orleans, Metairie, and Mandeville can participate:

  1. Attend or Support Local Events

    • NAMIWalks Southshore: Join the walk on October 4, 2025, at Audubon Park in New Orleans. This event raises awareness and funds for mental health programs in Louisiana.

  2. Engage Your Community

    • Host or attend a mental health discussion group, workshop, or informal “Tea & Talk” with neighbors, coworkers, or friends.

    • Share reliable mental health information on social media to help educate and normalize conversation.

  3. Learn Mental Health First Aid

    • Mental Health First Aid teaches you to recognize early signs of distress, respond effectively, and connect people with professional help. This skill can be life-saving for friends, family, and colleagues.

  4. Support Local Organizations

    • Contribute to or volunteer with Louisiana-based mental health organizations such as NAMI Louisiana or Caravelle Counseling and Wellness, which provide therapy, education, and resources to the community.

Even at a personal level, you can honor World Mental Health Day:

  • Check in with a loved one experiencing stress or emotional challenges.

  • Practice mindfulness or grounding exercises to reduce your own stress.

  • Make a plan for accessing professional support if you or someone you know is struggling.

Crisis Resources

If you or someone you love is experiencing a mental health crisis, immediate support is available:

  • Call or text 988 – Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

  • Veterans Crisis Line: Dial 988, then press 1.

  • Local mental health providers, including Caravelle Counseling and Wellness, are also available for assessment, therapy, and guidance.

World Mental Health Day is a reminder that mental wellness is essential, and that awareness, education, and action make a difference. By attending local events, supporting community initiatives, and practicing self-care, residents of New Orleans, Metairie, and Mandeville can contribute to a more compassionate, resilient, and connected community.

At Caravelle Counseling and Wellness, we encourage everyone to take a small but meaningful step this October—reach out, speak up, and prioritize mental health. Together, we can reduce stigma, improve access, and create a stronger support network for all.
